To the KB article, I can't do the steps because iTunes won't complete the installation because it can't start the AMDS.

To the first link, when I follow those steps, I get the following error from Windows:

"Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

Help..???!!!

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

HT1925: Removing and Reinstalling iTunes for Windows XP

HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Hi, Do you have any idea as to why I cannot remove (uninstall) Apple Mobile Device Support? I have disabled it in Windows Task Manager and tried to remove it in Windows Task & Features, the info window says its removing counting down to zero seconds but then it reverse's back to 40 seconds and closes, no message, nothing.

Any help much appreciated

Please ignore my previous post I followed "turningtest2" instructions and hey presto iTunes works. I still do not understand why I could not delete version 7.0.0.117 of AMDS. When I installed the latest version of iTunes it updated AMDS to a new level V7.1.0.32. and as I say it all works.

Thanks for the help
