UK iPhone in Canada

My friend wants to send me an Iphone 5 from England purchased in June 2013 to use in Canada. I was wondering if it would work here and how? It is unlocked in England, so would I need to get it unlocked? Would a Canadian sim work in it?

If the phone has been officially unlocked, then it should work with the SIM in Canada. The only thing that might not work is the LTE bands, and of course, if there is warranty left on the phone, that will only be good in the UK.

Hard to tell. Only the carrier that the phone is locked to can authorize an unlock. Purchasing the phone from a reseller does not guarantee that phone is officially unlocked. Your friend would have to find that out. If the phone is hacked to unlock, as soon as you try to restore the phone for yourself, it will get locked back to the carrier it is locked to. Before he sends you the phone, he better make sure that Activation Lock has been removed, and that it is officially unlocked. This explains Activation lock. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH13695

Cellular phones operate like a radio, and use cellular frequency bands to operate.

Just remember what I said if you update the phone. If it locks, then it was not officially unlocked. Keep that in mind as you restore the device to use on your network, and remember the information about Activation Lock. Have him either send you or keep the receipts so if Activation lock is active and you cannot contact the original owner, then you can send the device back for a refund. He might want to bring that up to the shop to ensure you can get a refund if it is locked with Activation lock.
