Pair nano with iOS device

So I thought it would be a no brainier, but apparently not. Is it possible to pair a nano 7th gen with another iOS device (iPhone, iPad, etc.)? And now that I'm asking, can you pair up with an android device?

I'm looking for two way data transfer, and I know that you have to get a 'handshake' before any connection is established. I can't even see my iPhone, or iPad...
