iPod detected but not recognized??

Im having problems with my iPod Nano (7th gen), I recently mgot a message from iTunes saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect and try again. If problem persists uninstall iTunes then install iTunes again.

I have followed these steps and also reset the iPod as well as gone into the control panel on my acer windows 8.1 and stopped the device and re started it but same message comes up.

Please HELP ME

Try this:


Windows 8.1, 64bit


It appears that the 64bit install messed up the device drivers for the Apple mobilie devices connecting as USB.


I tried many things, I may have missed a step below. But the following is what I believe was the fix - since it worked on a 2nd PC.


Make sure you are using an administrator account. Any of them on your machine will do for the following


a) Get Windows to restart the drivers:

- disconnect your USB device and close ITunes

- connect your USB device

- if ITunes loads, close it.


b) File explorer:

  • Open File explorer and browse to
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
  • In that folder there should be a set of files named "usbaapl64...."
  • right click on the one ending in "INF"
  • Select Install. It's very quick.
  • remove the USB device


c) Restart the computer.


When you login again, load ITunes before you attach your USB device.

Thank you for posting this Richard. It worked for me! I had already installed the driver but from device manager and not the order of steps you suggested. Your suggestion worked great. What a frustrating issue. And the suggestion of unstalling and reinstalling iTunes wasn't relevant. At least now we know that Apple doesn't use automated testing on iTunes install. At least not for the latest versions of Windows.

Thank you so much for the help richardmoye -- I had to create a community profile just to respond to you. ^-^ I only have to charge my iPod Nano every 1-2 weeks, or connect every now and then to upload some new songs, so this issue with the latest iTunes update only reached me this morning. So glad someone was able to provide a simple and quick fix! Thank you once more!
