http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Sprich Deinstallation in folgender Rheienfolge:
- iTunes
- Apple Software Update
- Apple Mobile Device Support
- Bonjour
- Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support

I had exactly the same problem. At the last Apple AutoUpdate something went wrong.
Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support was no longer possible.
Solution was :
Uninstall all Apple programs as been described by instructions here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
uninstall in the following order
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later )
uninstallation auf Apple Mobile Device Support fails, this is described below.
After the above (except the one) have been uninstalled go to the folder:
For me on Windows 7 :
C: \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Apple \ Mobile Device Support
This should then only contain the following two folders :
Internet Services and Mobile Device Support .
These two folders I have renamed to " Internet Services__ " and " Mobile Device Support__ " so actually only underscores added .
If renaming fails , perform a restart and try again.
After Rename succeeded perform a restart .
Than install iTunes, which should work now. The Apple Mobile Device Support is now re-installed properly and running.
During installation I did not install auto- update service and did noch set Itunes as default player .
After installation you can even erase the previously renamed folder with the underscores.
You should have a look prior to deletion of these both folders, for important media files.
