Any wisdom on getting Gmail to sync?

Changes I make on my iPhone and iPad sync immediately to each other, but never sync to Mail on the Mac. Changes I made on the Mac sync immediately to everywhere. So if I go out for the day, read/reply/delete a bunch of mail, when I get home the Mac still shows it all in the inbox brand new. It doesn't matter how long I wait, it never updates. I have to go through it all a second time.

The Mavericks Mail update did not help. 10.9.1 did not help. Deleting the Gmail account from the Mac and re-adding it did not help.
