I followed the directions to have my iPhone 4s from AT&T be unlocked, but I am unsure as to whether or not in worked. Anyone know how you can check or any indications that show it is unlocked?

If the phone has been officially unlocked, iTunes will notify you when you connect the phone that it has been unlocked.
You can also try to insert a SIM card from another provider to find out.
What if I had already switched my AT&T service onto a new phone? Is that bad? Or it doesn't matter?
Putting the SIM into a new iPhone does not affect the unlocking process for the old one.
I didn't put a new SIM card in... I bought a new iphone 5s and that is the phone i use now and my iPhone 4S is out of service... so can it still unlock like this? because I went through the process like in the email, but I never received a confirmation email like you said would happen... so did I do it wrong?
You can still get the old phone unlocked, if unlocking is supported for your device by your carrier. If you still have no confirmation from them, ask them again, sometimes it takes a little longer to process an unlock request😉
