My verizon inbox indicates 11,000 messages, I want to delete them

You don't do it from the phone. Delete them on the mail server.

And how is that done?
Log in to your mail account with a web browser.
Log onto your mail server (you have web-mail, right? Ask the email provider how to do that), and delete them.
