MY MAC HAS STOPPED TO READ/WRITE BDs WITH MY SAMSUNG BD WRITER SE-506BB AFTER AN APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE

Hi all,

starting from yesterday I'm not any more able to Read/Write a Blu Ray disk with may MacBook-pro (I use an external Samsung BD Writer 506-BB).

Until yesterday everything was working fine (read and write normally).

The BD writer (hardware) is OK cause it works in Windows and it is able to read all kind of BDs I have (both original films bought or personal videos masterized in BDs).

The Samsug Blu-Ray provided in the selling pack (the one with manuals) is the only BluRay recognized by my Mac.

All other Blu Ray disks (both original films, or my personal life videos masterized in Blu Ray) are not recognized by my Mac

The message I got from the system is "Il disco inserito non è leggibile da questo computer" (which translated in english is: THE DISK INSERTED IS NOT RECOGNISED BY THIS COMPUTER) and the BDs are not visible in "Finder window".

For sure this is a SOFTWARE issue and I have the impression that it is related to the very recent updates which have been released from Apple (because I haven't made any update on my Mac and the only authomatic updates received are the ones related to the full APPLE suite).

Does anyone have an idea on how to solve my issue?

I also have this problem. My Samsung SE-506BB is connected to my Mac Mini and worked perfectly up to the point when I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks. I use Toast Titanium 11 to write files to disks. This works OK for my DVD burner, also a Samsung model, but now does not like my Blu Ray burner which I need to archive files asI have no intention of using any form of Cloud storage for my files. The disks that I am using are TDK which received good reviews but none of the reviers specified which burner they were used in.

Questions..

Are these disks incompatible with Samsung burners?

Could it be a bad batch of disks?

Is the problem due to the upgrade to Mavericks bearing in mind the drive worked OK before upgrade?

Is the problem with Roxio Toast?

A combination of the above?

Something that I have not thought of yet?

Some help would be much appreciated as I am wasting so many disks trying to get the drive to work properly.

Turns out my issue was a hardware defect, the lazer for BluRays discs is a lot more sensitive than for DVD so it has an easier time of getting bumped out of place. Luckily I was within the warranty timeframe so I just sent it back to Samsung and they fixed it. Not sure if you can do that but it might be something to look into.

Can't really speak to your other questions but I'd make sure it works with a regular BluRay disk (just rent something form RedBox) before throwing out your TDKs. Mavericks shouldn't mess you up though, I've had no issue.

Hi, I do not have a technical explanation but my issue was solved two days after my question.

Probably the software update released by Apple was not fully installed on my mac; after i switched off and then switched on again my mac it started to work perfectly again.

I can only suggest to try to do the same.

Hi. This is extra to my own post of June 9th 2014. I found that the Samsung SE_506BB is very picky on what discs it will burn. I have solved the problem by ditching the Samsung and buying the LG burner which is much more expensive but accepts pretty well any disc you can throw at it. Don't be deceived by the tech spec for this machine which states that the operating system is Windows only. Hook it up to a Mac and away you go with no fuss. It also burns discs at a much faster rate than the Samsung. I know it is more money but the lack of hassle and frustration is well worth the extra.
