HT201328: How to unlock your iPhone

Learn about How to unlock your iPhone

Q: An unlocked Optus iPhone 4s which accepted a Telstra SIM whilst on IOS6 failed to accept the Testra SIM after an upgrade to IOS7.  Many visits to the Optus Shop and the Apple Store have failed to resolve the issue.

An "Out of Contract" Optus iPhone 4S accepted and worked perfectly with a Telstra SIM.

Following an upgrade to IOS7.0.4 the iPhone 4S will no longer work with the Telsta SIM.

The following error message is recieved

“The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported”

Apple Store Genius Bar on checking the 4S iphone in the Apple database indicate that the Service Details Policy is assigned  to “Australia Optus (Singtel)” and only Optus can unlock it.

Optus indicate that teh iPhone is unlocked and I have a stalmate as noone is able to advise how to rectify the issue.

A checkof teh Telstra SIM was undertaken on another IOS6 Optus 4S iPhone and it functioned correctly.

I am aware others have had this issue as there is a reference to it on the Optus Support Community.

It means that an international SIM cannot be used in teh iPhone until the issue is resolved

I am of teh opinion teh it is an IOS7 software upgrade issue not a problem with teh harware or the carrier

I await any feedback

Thank you

Did you restore your unlock iPhone as new?

You need to do that before it's truely unlock.

Installing the iOS update won't remove what Apple shows in their database regarding the carrier the iPhone is carrier locked with.

When the iPhone was out of contract with Optus, did you request the iPhone being unlocked with Optus? Optus then sends the unlock request to Apple and when ready on Apple's end, the unlocking is done with iTunes on your computer.

Regardless if Optus shows the iPhone as unlocked on their end, Apple doesn't in their database so Optus needs to send the unlock request to Apple for the iPhone.

    Thanks Allan

I have had the run around with this.

An unlock request was never fomally lodged with Optus but teh phone worked with teh Telstra SIM while it was on IOS6.

Optus advised that all Optus phones are unlocked on IOS7

I will check with Apple again on teh basis of your advice and see what they say.  It looks like a 5th trip to Optus to try and resolve

    You're welcome.

Since the iPhone is carrier locked with Optus, the only way it could work with another carrier's SIM card and service under iOS 6 was by hacking/jailbreaking the iPhone to unlock it. Installing an iOS update on an iPhone that was hacked to be unlocked re-locks the iPhone to the carrier it was sold as carrier locked with when new.

All Optus carrier locked iPhones are not unlocked with iOS 7.

Only the carrier an iPhone was sold as carrier locked with can officially unlock the iPhone, or send the unlock request to Apple on the owner's behalf. Since Apple's database shows the iPhone as being locked with Optus, Optus must send the unlock request to Apple for the iPhone. When the unlock process is ready, the unlocking is done with iTunes on your computer. This is the only way a carrier locked iPhone can be officially unlocked.

The symptom means that the phone is locked to a carrier. It may have been hacked to unlock it on iOS 6, rather than unlocked the "legal" way. Restoring iOS or upgrading will undo the hacked unlock. If this is true then requesting that Optus unlock it may not work, because a phone that has previously been hacked to unlock it will usually rail to unlock when unlocked the right way.

    Hi ckuan

I am not sure what you mean by

"restore your unlock iPhone as new?"

Do you mean before the iOS7 upgrade

    If so NO

The upgrade was done with an old Optus SIM  installed then due to being advised by Optus that all IOS 7 phones are unlocked it was assume the telstra SIM would work.

This has proven not to be teh case

    Thanks Allan

We are in teh process of trying to get Optus support to issue Apple teh authority to unlock teh phone.

    Fingers crossed

Did you read the link I've provided?

If your iPhone was hacked/jailbroken as other posters suggested then you are on your own.

    Hi Lawrrence.

The phones hgave never been hacked

Both were purchased together from Optus, both were on IOS6 and both are now out of contract and have been replaced with a iPhone 5S

    Both accepted the Telstra SIM

The one upgraded to IOS7 will now no longer work as previously stated.

I am waiting for a response from Optus
