Project/Events on External USB drive?

On a new iMac, I'd like to have the event/projects on an external drive. Will an external USB drive be sufficient, in speed, etc.? Or will should I plan on a Thunderbolt drive?

It would appear, since iMovie renders in the background, it shouldn't make any difference. Is this correct? And if not, why not?
