When I open one of my albums in iPhoto, it appears as though there are several duplicates, but when I click on those "duplicates", they turn out to be completely different pictures. How can I fix this?

What version of iPhot? IS OS X 10.8.5 the correct version of the OS as your profile reports?
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your thumbnails - this may take several tries
