iTunes Match freezes up my MacBook Pro

Little help here!

This is an issue that's been happening for quite sometime. Anytime I'm connected to the internet and try opening iTunes, obviously iTunes Match begins working. However, the issue I am having is every time this happens iTunes freezes up and I get the beach ball of death. Sometimes I force quit iTunes and it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Can anyone give me a hand on what is going on?

I have:

MacBook Pro. 15-inch. 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Mid 2009. 4 GB Memory. Running Mavericks.

Mind you this has happened before Mavericks as well.
