iMac shows grey screen in target display mode when connected to new Mac Pro

I'm trying to use my Mid 2011 27 inch iMac as the display for my new Mac Pro. When I click Command F2 the iMac displays a grey screen and my cursor sits at the top right hand corner which I am unable to move. The problem lies in the iMac as I have just tried using my friends iMac (2013) as the display for my Mac Pro and it worked fine. Any ideas as to how to fix this problem?

I had this problem today when I connected up my new Mac Pro to late 2011 27 iMac with thunderbolt. The solution I found was to run the Mac Pro on a standard TV with HDMI and go through the usual set up process - critically what solved the problem was updating to the latest Mavericks release. I then reconnected the Mac Pro through thunderbolt to the iMac and worked first time..

Just don't ask about sharing bluetooth keyboards between the two machines..not solved that one!

I might've solved the "sharing Bluetooth keyboard and mouse between two machines" issue... or rather, devised a more elegant solution. Have a look at my process here: http://jamesholland.com/post/80600076762/hacking-mac-os-x-to-toggle-bluetooth-fo r-better-target

I need to re-write the AppleScript to detect the current Bluetooth status and toggle it (and the blue notification light) rather than requiring a different press (long vs short) to turn it on/off, but it works for the time being and I was in a rush to get it working in a somewhat elegant way last night.

ShStar, I'd recommend trying my solution first before anything else. Connect your new Mac Pro up to any HD tv using the HDMI cable - set it up on there including, most importantly, getting the latest Mavericks update - then once all set up reconnect to your iMac using the Thunderbolt cable and it should work - I had exactly the same issue as you and this solved it.
