Aggregate Device won't play: "device has no output controls"

I used the Audio MIDI Setup utility.

I created the Aggregate Device but the Prefs/Sound /Output tells me that the device "has no output controls" so it won't use it.

The two devices are a bluetooth headset and the built-in output jack (with a plain earbud connected -- no controls on the wires).

Both work individually.
