How to export epub documents from ibooks

I have loaded books in epub format to my ipad and can read them in the ibooks app. This is nice, but I would also like to see them on my PC (Windows or Linux) or my Kindle. This doesn't seem to be possible.

ibooks does allow exporting or mailing PDFs, and using itunes I can also copy epub books to my PC that I have acquired from the itunes store, but epub books I acquired in a different way seem to be locked in my ipad forever.

Does anybody know if there is a way to get them out of the ibooks prison? And why is Apple so selective and doesn't just allow me to do what I want with my device?

I am running iOS 7.

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iOS 5
