Q: just taken delivery of my new Macbook Air, i7 8Gb

My mac needed 1.5gb of updates, downloaded, installation still ongoing after 12 hours.  Initially blue progress bar, now gray progress bar.  Why is tjis takibg so long???

    1.5 GB is a lot.    1.5 GB = 12 Gigabit.   At average DSL speeds of 1.5 Megabit per second it will take you 8000 seconds or 133 minutes or 2 hours 13 minutes.   If you have Fiberoptic of 15 Mbps of course it will take one tenth as long.

     

    Shared computers on the same network will slow it down.    If you have an open wireless network that will slow you down, compared to a closed WPA2 network.   802.11b wireless network maxes at 11 Mbps for all devices. 802.11g maxes at 33 Mbps for all devices combined throughput.  802.11n is fast enough to handle over 100 Mbps.

     

    Mac OS X 10.3 hasn't seen the light of day new since 2004.

    You don't have Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier.  You were lucky I spotted your post.
