Jan 28, 2014 5:23 AM in response to kaz-kby Steve Pogson,Hm, not sure I understand this - as I said, the picture from the HDMI output from a new MBP was perfect, suggesting that the computer/graphics card was the problem.

HDMI should not be your main display output esp for FCP-X and Logic.
Your Mac came with the Nvidia GT120. The better choice up until weeks ago was the Apple ATI 5770, now EOL and no longer available incl. 3rd party outlets. Also over 4 yrs in graphics and lacked a MDP.

Guide to Apple graphic display adapters needed
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3235You can connect a DVI to HDMI adapter or cable to an active Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter but that won't give you any audio over HDMI.You could connect the DVI displays to the Mini DisplayPorts with active adapters and use a DVI to HDMI cable or adapter from the DVI port to the TV.If you want audio via HDMI, you can use audio from the Mac Pro's optical output with this DVI to HDMI converter: -
Jan 28, 2014 7:31 AM in response to Steve Pogsonby Ricks ricks@macgurus.com,I would tend to agree that the graphics card is probably the problem. I have several places where we run adapters from DVI to HDMI input and they work just like they should. This is a good way to convert DVI and combine with audio into HDMI.
Never much liked that GeForce 120 card that came in the 2009. You can get a card that supports HDMI. The 7950 does have HDMI built in. Never tried that card, but it's pretty well rated. I sure WANT to try one! Looks like a great high end choice.
