MacBook Pro 15" Retina Crashes with GPU Panic

Hello, I'm pretty bored with problem which happens more than 5 times per day while I'm using my MacBook Pro 15" with Retina.

My laptop restars and deadlocks and I have to make 'hard' reboot (by pressing power button for a while).

After restarting it shows me dialog which is about system error and asks me to send a report to Apple.

How can I solve this problem? I can't even do my work fine because of this issue.

This looks like a GPU problem, but I've helped a couple people with the same thing by having them remove Virtualbox. If you google it, you'll find it doesn't play well with Mavericks.

The crash dump indicates a GPU issue.

Print out a copy of your kernel panic and go to an Apple store or Apple Authorizes Service Provider with your machine and the documentation.

Did you upgrade to Mavericks recently? Some people have reported that downgrading from Mavericks to the previous OS made the problem go away. Disabling automatic graphics switching (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4110) can sometimes bypass the problem. You can also try downloading gfxstatus and set the video to Intel. http://gfx.io

That's where I've seen this before. People who've upgraded to Mavericks and are running Virtualbox. At least in some cases this is what happens.

I updated to Mavericks as the update was shown in AppStore. Now I'm using OS X 10.9.1.

How can I do VST test by myself?

May be reinstalling Mavericks will help me ?

And one more bad thing: my warranty ended at 29th of December 2013 so now I'm in a panic because of I don't think that Apple will pay for repairing 😟 I'm really upset with it. Moreover, I'm living in Russia, so we don't have Genius bars here and so on... so I'm really praying for the solution and hope that this is not localboard or any harware...

By the way, if I turn off my MBP (Apple->Switch off) and than try to turn it on by the power button for first time it switches on but no image appears, than I hold power button for a while it turns off, and only on second attemp to switch it on everything works fine.

Unfortunatly, you can't. Techs at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers have this test software. I check for a AASPs in Russia and found none.

You can try an Apple Hardware Test (AHT). It is not as extensive as VHT but it is what you have access to.

Try the fixes suggested:

If you are running VirtualBox, disable it.

You can also try downloading gfxstatus and set the video to Intel. http://gfx.io

Downgrading the OS to the previous version installed (Mountain Lion).

Before downgrading to ML (a difficult step) you can test if the problem goes away with a clean install of ML on an external disks. Install ML on an extrernal hard drive or a 16+ GB thumb drive and boot from it. (If you need instructions on how to do that, just ask.) Install an application that uses the GPU heavily and try that.

Be sure you maintain a current backup on an external disk in case the problem gets worse.

Actually, it is rather diffucult to answer, because I've mentioned this problem around 10 days ago and now it became really irritating 😟

Ok, what I've done at this moment:

1. VirtualBox uninstalled

2. Coda uninstalled

3. NVRAM reseted

4. SMC reseted

Problem still appears at the moment when I'm trying to turn on MB.

Now I'm thinking about re-installing Mavericks, but I didn't know how to 'clean' installation, I mean, not 'update'. What do you think will it help?

AHT is not a comprehensive test. If it finds something then it means the hardware is faulty. If it does not find something, the hardware could still be at fault. Since it happens routinely just as you boot it that suggests a hardware GPU issue. Rather than fixing this hardware fault we are looking for ways to get around it so the OS will not trip on it.

I hope it does not progress to the point where you can’t boot past it. I asked if you are maintaining recent backups. That is most important given this failure mode. If you need instructions on backing up, just ask.

Reïnstalling Mavericks won’t hurt. I don’t think it will address the problem but it is simple so worth a try, especially if the system disk corrupt. To test your disk, run Disk Utility (in the Applications > Utilities folder) and select the system disk (upper left icon). Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”? If not the disk is failing. Click on the system volume (indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD") and the Verify Disk. If it reports errors in red then we have found a problem to fix. If it finishes with a green “OK” message then the disk is healthy. If you need more instruction on using Disk Utility, just ask.

Before you try to reïnstall Mavericks, try these two quick and easy things I mentioned before:

- Disabling automatic graphics switching (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4110).

- Downloading gfxstatus and set the video to Intel. http://gfx.io

These have bypassed the problem for other users with GPU issues.

A clean install involves reformatting the system disk (erasing it), reïnstalling OS X and the reloading the data from a full backup. It is a big step and if the restore fails you will lose data. I would attempt it as a last resort.

Before trying a full restore I would test running Mountain Lion from an external disk. If you have a Time Machine or other backup drive and don’t have another spare drive you can partition the Time Machine drive and install ML there. Post back for instructions if and when you are ready to take that route. If you don’t have a backup drive then it is time to get one and then you can try the ML experiment on that disk.

Thank you for your great suggestions, I really appriciate your help!

I have one more question about switching graphics. Sometimes I need to use Final Cut and integrated graphics will not be able to render videos and so on that's my worries.

BTW, I have been using gfxstatus but during my conversation with Apple specialist (phone conversation) he told me to uninstall it, because it is not signed by Apple or smth like this.

About backups: after first issue I copied all data to external drive, so now I'm free to do everything I want with system. I mean, reinstall, downgrade and so on 🙂 In another words I'm ready to try whatever to solve this problem.

Is downgrading to ML is that difficult ?

It is true one should be careful about downloading software from unknown sties. However http://gfx.io is a well know site and gfxstatus is routinely used on Macs. In this particular case it could be the key to stabilizing your system. It would allow you to the GPU on and off so you use it only when needed. With it off I believe you will be able to render all scenes but at slower speeds.

Downloading to ML involves creating a clone backup of Mavericks, reformatting (and erasing) your system disk, installing ML and then manually reloading your data from the cloned disk. It is a big step: How to revert OS X back from Mavericks: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6161 .

So, as I mentioned, I would test installing ML in an external disk partition before I made the switch to ML. It has a chance of solving the problem but only a chance. I would also exhaust the other simpler tricks before testing ML on an external partition. If you get to the point of testing ML on your external drive, I believe it can be partitioned as needed without touching the data already backed up on it. Post back for those details.
