Is there a way to convert Applework’s “Clip and Click Art” application files, - AW5 Clippings, Click Art, and MacGallery - from Snow Leopard, to use in Mavericks on a new mac?

Appleworks itself and any associated programs are PPC (unless they are so old that they are Classic) and won't run on Lion and later.

The only way to run such applications is under emulation. Success has been reported in running Snow Leopard Server under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and is preferable to using ordinary Snow Leopard which is quite tricky. I haven't tried this myself: use at your own discretion.

There is a collection of Clippings in a folder inside the AppleWorks folder in Applications. These are AW draw documents. The only programs which can open these are EazyDraw (right) and Intaglio (though when I tested the demo it wouldn't open complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones. If you are dealing with complex technical drawings EazyDraw is probably the best choice: it's about the same cost as the whole of iWork (when downloaded, and rather more expensive on a CD), but cheaper than some other vector based programs, and seems to handle the whole process well - though it does operate somewhat differently from AppleWorks. There is a much cheaper version available on the Mac App Store, but note that it does not open AppleWorks Draw Documents: neither does the latest version from their website (4.1.x) - for this you need 4.0.x 'Retro', also available from the website.

There used to be some online clipart etc. for AppleWorks but this has been unavailable for some years.

Libre Office should run in Mavericks (though it doesn't specifically mention that and I'm not in a position to test it) so you could simply open AW documents there and save them in another format.

I am not sure that the filter, present in LibreOffice 4.1, is sufficiently advanced to convert the Clipping and ClipArt of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks.

Maybe you can test if you can recover some with the pre-release version of LibreOffice 4.2 ( which will see some big improvement in the conversion of graphics), but the results will be far from perfect...

LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents created in AW, but when I tried to open a clipping it showed the code. However when I opened the clipping in AW6 and 'saved as' in AW format, LibreOffice opened it OK; so probably the clippings are in AW5 format.

This means you could save them out this way, but as you could also save them as TIFF and other formats there may be little point unless you want to be able to modify the vectors, in which case LibreOffice would do it; obviously you do need to be able to run AW to do this.

do you have a file to test ? Ie. as I just lost the harddrive of the machine that I used to run AppleWorks, I can no longer test directly ; I tried to find some clip arts on the web, but maybe I only find some drawing documents which contain some clip art...

The format of this file seems very different from the other AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files: it seems to begin with 16 caracter and them a EPS files ( %!PS-Adobe-3.0 EPSF-3.0 ...), ... while the type of the document is PEPS (data in the file information).

So there is no chance that LibreOffice can open this type of document, maybe in some far future, ... It may be interesting to see if some Adobe software accepts to open this document or not...

FJ extracts .pct and .eps images from the clip art files in AppleWorks.

EPS worked OK, PICT didn't.

You're right about that .pct. Interestingly, perhaps, QuickTime 7 will open the FJ-extracted .pct, so the .pct could be exported from QT7 to some compatible format. Too many steps. . . . Besides, the .eps appears to be of higher quality.

I don't have a 'Clip and Click Art' folder, just a 'Clippings' folder but I expect the actual files are much the same. I think you're going to have trouble if you want to be able to modify the vectors whatever you do, but you can only experiment. As you have SL you can still try opening the clipart in AW and exporting it in various formats.
