unable to use i-cloud or update apps due to wrong Apple ID account

When I switched from my i-phone 4 to a 5C an old email id was input for my i-cloud account at the Apple store. It is one I no longer have access to & when I try to reset the password it will not accept my date of birth and I do not get the emails to reset the password. The Iphone 4 didn't have this problem, not sure why they linked the old account instead of my current account. I went back to the store but they could not fix it. Thanks

iPhone 5c, iOS 7.0.4

Contact Apple Account Security to reset the old Apple ID (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699). Perhaps the apps were purchased or downloaded with the old Apple ID. If so they will always be associated with it, and you will need the password for the old ID whenever you update them. The only way around this is to delete the apps, and purchase them with your new Apple ID.

In general it is a bad idea to get a new Apple ID, for this and other reasons. You can change the email address of an Apple ID and keep the same account forever; there is rarely a need for a new one.
