why won't Mail.app make an internet connection?

I have my ethernet connection configured to automatically connect when needed. I launch Mail, and nothing happens. Shouldn't Mail call up a connection? What gives? Never was a problem on my old iMac. Is Macbook Pro the problem?

MacBook Pro 15", Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What do you mean?

I launch Mail, and nothing happens.

Do you mean that Mail opens but does nothing, or that it quits immediately after being launched, or what?
