Automatic Backup Fails - "High system thermal level"

Time machine automatic backups are failing on my system (2011 27" iMac). Console reports the following:

1/29/14 5:04:07.661 AM com.apple.backupd[1433]: Not starting automatic Time Machine backup: High system thermal level.

1/29/14 6:04:57.875 AM com.apple.backupd[1494]: Not starting automatic Time Machine backup: High system thermal level.

1/29/14 7:05:37.112 AM com.apple.backupd[1543]: Not starting automatic Time Machine backup: High system thermal level.

1/29/14 8:06:07.328 AM com.apple.backupd[1591]: Not starting automatic Time Machine backup: High system thermal level.

I can find little to no information about this error. Manually backing up with Time Machine works fine, but the automatic backups won't resume.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), Mid '11 27", 3.1 i5, 12GB DDR3
