Well you could, but it would be a lot cheaper to just buy a new remote. They are like $20

There is no way to set up home sharing on the Apple TV without the original remote from Apple, you will need to purchase a new remote from the Apple Store.

yes you can i just did it. i downloaded the remote app on my iphone 5.

then you go into home sharing and you get a code. on your macbook you go into itunes put in the code and booom. you are in. zero dramas.

Home sharing has to be enabled on the Apple TV, there is no way to do that without a remote. The newer models (2nd and 3rd gen) have no syncing capability with iTunes, and that method will not work.

Any code association only applies to 1st gen Apple TV.

Again, the remote app will need home sharing enabled on the APPLE TV. They also need to be on the same wifi network. The OP has a new network.
