How to make a Cover Page? Meaning, no page number count on first page.

If you put in a section break at the end of your cover page, and then configure the section so that the next section (the body of the paper) starts at page 1, the page count will reflect the total number of pages in that section (plus any other section afterward where the page number is not restarted).

To do this, insert a section break, open the “Inspector” (if it isn’t open already), choose the “Layout Inspector” (the second button from the right along the top), select the “Section” button, and change the Page Numbers” to “Start at:” 1. Also uncheck “Use previous headers & footers.” Now your page count (which presumably is in the header or footer) will reflect the number in that and any following sections -- unless you restart the page numbers).

Unfortunately if you just do this the cover page will be counted and the following page will be numbered 2 (at least in my experience). Putting in the new section will allow the real first page to be numbered 1. Happily this is passed on to Word when the file is exported too, though for some reason the right margin of the header in my file is a lot less than it should be and outside the page area below (which I hope can easily be fixed)

There is no need to create a new section. In the layout inspector, the second icon, click the section tab & check the box for first page is different or words to that effect. I think it's layout, otherwise it's the first icon, the document inspector. This will suppress headers & footers on the first page. In AppleWorks this was called Title Page, but it is the same thing & both are in the section formatting area for the respective application.

You are right. The only way I know of to change the page count is to put in a section break. You can give a page count by section or group of sections, as long as you do not restart the page numbering along the way. So, just make sure that if you add another section break further along the document, that you change the page numbering back to “Continue from previous section” after the new break. If you do not, both the page numbering and the count will reset as the new section takes it’s formatting from the previous one.

I could not reproduce your problem, but I did notice that the default “header & footer” style sheet dropped the “right tab” at the left margin. It could be that you have your margin indents set to something other than zero and these are not translating properly (e.g., Pages will not let you set negative indentions, but MSWord will.)

What turned out to be happening with the page numbers was simple. Word was running them not in the header itself but at the position where it places page numbers normally. I just cut it from there and pasted it into the header and it was fine after that.

Those settings are fine and it will work. Though whether you have the "First page is different" checked or not is up to you -- it will make no difference with the page numbering or page count. As long as you; 1) add a section break, 2) restart the numbering, and 3) have a different header & footer from the first section (i.e., "Use previous. . ." is unchecked), you are good to go.

All you really need are the first two. The only reason you need the third is if you put a header or footer on the first page of your second section, that would also appear on your title page. Both pages would say, for example, "Page 1 of 1."
