itunes claims I'm not connected to the internet, but I am

I've tried signing in to the iTunes store numerous times, using version 11.0.1.126. Every time, I get an error message telling me to check my internet connection (which is always connected when I make the attempt) or even claiming that I'm not connected to the internet when I most definitely am, and every other internet app on my computer knows it. And yes, I have permissions set in windows firewall.

Is it possible to make iTunes detect an internet connection once it's made up its mind that it's not there? If so, how?

This is the error messsage I get upon opening iTunes:

ITunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was terminated unexpectedly.

Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

And of course, my network connection is perfectly active for every app except iTunes.

This is the error message I get when I open the iTunes Store tab or try to sign in to my iTunes account:

iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. An unknown error occurred (0x80090318).

Make sure your network connection is active and try again.

... and whatever this "unknown error" might be, my internet connection is active enough for every relevant program on my computer except iTunes.

If it helps at all, I'm running XP SP3 on a Dell Latitude D600, using the free version of Avast! and Windows firewall.

I tried diagnostics, and got an apparently self-contradictory set of results:

Network connectivity:

*Network interfaces verified

iTunes Store connectivity:

* Internet connection verified

* Secure link to iTunes Store failed

So we've established that iTunes knows I have an internet connection, yet for some unexplained reason refuses to establish a connection with the store.

It gave me a "help" button, but of course it also refused to establish a connection to the help server.

Does anybody know a work-around to this cul-de-sac? Since even this massive, resource-hogging bloatware program doesn't even contain its own help files, even for connectivity issues, I'm at a total loss.
