MacBook Pro - Internet problems - DNS Prefetching?

My MacBook Pro (10.9.1/Mavericks) has recently developed issues connecting to the Internet and loading pages. Other Apple products in my home are fine. I've had the device for almost 2.5 years with no previous problems. It's driving me crazy! My research suggests it may be down to Safari's DNS prefetching and I've done a few things (suggested online) to attempt to address this but unfortunately nothing has worked. Has anyone else experienced similar issues and can anyone help me or suggest what else it could be?

Thank you for your interest. Two things are happening, in equal measure. I either cannot get connected to the internet at all or, when I am connected and trying to access a website, the blue bar goes half way along then stops. I managed to access the internet no problem this morning but when I put my search criteria in to Google (BBC News), it would not load, despite being connected to the internet and having full wi-fi strength. After waiting 15 minutes, I switched off! We have an iPad Air, 2 iPods and an iPhone and all access the internet and perform excellently. The problem is just with the MacBook Pro and is a very recent issue.

Double-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

www.google.com

Launch the Network Utility application.

Step 1

Select the Lookup tab and paste into the address field (command-V). Press return. Post the output that appears below – the text, please, not a screenshot.

Step 2

Select the Ping tab and do the same. Please enter the same input as you did in Step 1. Don't use the output of Step 1 as input to Step 2.

Important Note

Some web browsers and mail clients will automatically convert a domain name such as "www.example.com" to a clickable URL, such as http://www.example.com. That will interfere with the test. If necessary, edit the input in the Network Utility window to remove any added characters.

It may be worth mentioning that, on this occasion, I was able to connect to the internet and to the Apple Support Communities page easily!

Thank you.

Well, unfortunately, we're back to square one. Connected to the internet very quickly this morning - then it all went wrong again! Was left 'hanging' for one hour trying to connect to a webpage, then I gave up, shut down and restarted. Took 45 minutes to get to this Support page to contact you!

Herewith the diagnostics this time :

Lookup has started…

www.google.com -> The operation couldn’t be completed. (kCFErrorDomainCFNetwork error 2.)

Ping has started…

ping: cannot resolve www.google.com: Unknown host

Any ideas? Thank you.
