Q: Messages says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage"

iMac14,2

MacOS 10.9.1

All of the sudden I can't send any messages on my iMac. It was working about a week ago. No update to the OS has happened since then. Every email address and phone number now says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage." Old conversations that are months old suddenly aren't updated and I can't send another message. I can't initiate new conversation because of the error. I can't even send a message to myself from the iMac (works fine from my iPhone). Just to be clear, these contacts are wtihout a doubt registered with iMessage. I'm not trying to send an iMessage to my grandma's 2004 flip phone. Messages/iMessage still works on my iPhone 5S, iPad 3, MacPro at home, and MacBook Pro. I've tried disabling and signing out of the account and signing back in. The best result I got from that is the "To:" field turning blue, as it does when sending to a registered iMessage address, only to then turn red, as it does when it thinks the address is not registered.  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi rdlange,

On the iPad in Settings > Messages remove the Apple ID.

Set the iPad to Airplane Mode.

After a few minutes take it out of Airplane Mode

In the Settings Messages add back the Apple ID.

It should then get a Pop up saying what the iPhone is using.
Accept this so that the iPhone Number is added to the Send and Receive IDs.

The Folders and associated files were sent back to their original position using the "undo" feature (except for the files you said to delete. Now, are you instructing me to re-create the two files from scratch that had previously been deleted, per your original instructions?

Ralph, I've read through some of your other notes hoping to find a fix, this latest one did not work. I went into Messages and used "Sign out," effectively resetting the Messages software, I no longer receive the error message stating this account is not registered. That is fine, no problems there the username is once again in the color BLUE, but there is still a red exclamation point next to the actual message. I have tried several times to send a message, but to no avail.

    Hi,

Sorry about the Time Zone delay/break.

I allowed for the fact you may have emptied the Trash and that Undo therefore would not work.

This Thread was about  all the other Contacts the Poster was iMessaging were showing they were not registered. (the likelihood is that their own app was not logged in properly).

The Red "not Delivered" alert and messages can be because the other end is in fact out of range (no WiFi connection or no suitable carrier coverage if an iOS device with SIM card).

You also sometimes see the alert and the person says they got the iMessages. In these cases in seems one device such as a computer and the Apple ID  is Off (which gives the Not registered/Not at Home type response) AND then the iPhone gets a synced version and they read that.

The same is true if the iPhone is set to the iPhone Number and the Mac is getting synced versions of the iMessages.

Get him to try a Safe Boot of his Mac.

If his account (both Mac User and the iMessages account) work in this boot just reboot the computer.

If that does not work  do  PRAM/NVRAM reset

Hold down CMD+ALT+P+R At Start up and wait until you have heard 3 Start up Bongs before letting go and letting it boot fully.

    Ralph,

I have a similar issue: I only see a red error message when attempting to send a text to a TMobil ph number from my computer (MacBook Pro); all others are fine. Is it the carrier?

    Hi,

If the T Mobile number is not an iPhone then the Mac will not be able to send an SMS message rather than an iMessages like your iPhone can.

In this respect the iOS version and the Mac version are different.

At the same time if the iPhone was seeing these messages it would not sync them to the Mac ans the Mac can't receive SMS messages on it's iMessages account.

It is possible to add a phone Number of certain US carriers to an AIM Buddy list sand SMS to those.

Hey guys, I've been having this problem since yesterday when i both got the new update and set up iCloud. I'm not sure which is the problem but apparently the new update is tripping up iMessage so if you just updated this site might helphttp://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/apple/3472220/how-fix-imessage-in-ios-7/

I was still having trouble after this - it was saying awaiting activation under the iMessage activation button in settings - so I went back to the good old guides for turning these things on in the first place iOS: Troubleshooting FaceTime and iMessage activation and all seems to be fine now. So if its not just your computer that's acting up it might be more your phone's problem

    Hi Ralph,

Thanks so much: just tried your fix, and for the moment at least the problem has disappeared.

    Grazie!

    Hi, guys

i am having the same problem with you since 2 days ago. Messages says "XXXX is not registered with iMessage" and it has been driving me crazy!!!

I can't communicate with anyone of my contacts. I have tried different networks and it's still the same.

The weirdest thing is that i don't have an iphone or an ipad (in that case we could locate the problem easily). I own only a Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 (13" 256GB).

So, if you know something about this and how i can solve it please respond...

    Thank you!

    Hi,

First of all open Font Book and scroll to the bottom of the list of Fonts.

Check AppleGothic.ttf is there and that it Validates.

    Hi,

Use the Apple Icon to left and chose the About this Mac item.

In the panel that is displayed click twice on the line that tell you the current OS version iin use.

It will change to the Build Number (another way Apple counts the versions) and then to the Serial Number of your Mac.

    Is this present ?
