Q: Messages says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage"

iMac14,2

MacOS 10.9.1

All of the sudden I can't send any messages on my iMac. It was working about a week ago. No update to the OS has happened since then. Every email address and phone number now says "XXXXX is not registered with iMessage." Old conversations that are months old suddenly aren't updated and I can't send another message. I can't initiate new conversation because of the error. I can't even send a message to myself from the iMac (works fine from my iPhone). Just to be clear, these contacts are wtihout a doubt registered with iMessage. I'm not trying to send an iMessage to my grandma's 2004 flip phone. Messages/iMessage still works on my iPhone 5S, iPad 3, MacPro at home, and MacBook Pro. I've tried disabling and signing out of the account and signing back in. The best result I got from that is the "To:" field turning blue, as it does when sending to a registered iMessage address, only to then turn red, as it does when it thinks the address is not registered.  Any help would be much appreciated.

It launches Messages and nothing happens (empty) unless I'm doing it wrong. Unless I uncheck "enable this account". That is the only action that generates anything in the terminal window. Here is the result:

    Hi,

Both you recent  posts look like there is an issue with the Keychain item for the iMessages account.

In Applications/Utilities open the Keychain Access app.

With the Login option selected top left and Passwords lower left you should find an items that starts IDS: your Apple ID-Auth Token in the right hand pane.

If you double click this items the info panel about it shows up.

This in turn has a "Show Password" tick box.

Ticking the box brings up a Dialogue box where you need to enter your Mac Users Password and the Allow Once button.

It will then show you the password which in this case is a Public key.

The password window will only display part of it. If you place the cursor at the left hand end and then use the Downward Arrow on the keyboard you will find the key is very long.

What is less clear is in the "Keys" section which of the stored keys actually refer to the one linked to iMessages.

At this point I would try deleting the Auth Token item and re-launching Messages to see if that helps.

I THINK YOU ARE ON TO SOMETHING!! Here is a screenshot of the keys I found. You will notice that only one of the 4 allowed me to successfully check the "show password" box. Even then, the field shows up completely blank (I checked). I would have followed your recommendation of deleting them, but am unsure as to wether it is something I can reverse if this does't work.

    Hi,

Compared to that pic there should be another  (It might only exists after OS X 10.8.2 or the Mavericks Install whichever you did first)

It should list your Apple ID as part of it's name and have a much more recent date to it.

    Ok....

It should be created when you manage to Login to the iMessages server.

I had presumed that if you deleted it (if you had one) it would be recreated when the App tried to Login again.

At the risk of going around in circles I know of only two reasons why the iMessages accounts will not login:-

    1) the AppleGothic.ttf  Font is messed up on Not On  (Helvetica and Lucida Grande are also needed but the app will not even launch if they are missing).

    2) the Serial Number (which is stored on the Logic/Mother board) needs to be present to help create the IDS xxxx-Auth Token item

This does presume that you are using the Apple ID with the right password stored at Apple for that ID.

i.e. a Google Mail ID will have a Password to access Google but it should have a different password as an Apple ID.

Not sure I understand your angle. My FaceTime works, my serial number is there (as far as being listed in "About This Mac"), I already showed you my fonts are present. Why do I not have this key you mentioned; and should I still delete the/any others? Could my Mac UUID, serial number, etc be configured incorrectly? whats should try?

I checked out this thread Impossible to activate iMessage and Facetime in Mavericks

Just came upon this too thought i might try it

    Hi,

The VisualPro link may not be the "right" Board Serialiser app.

My understanding is that there are about three "out there" but you have to be specific about which one works with your Mac (and the sites I have managed to look at don't seem that clear).

To launch any app certain Fonts have to be present on the System.

Helvetica is needed for iChat and Messages  amongst many other Apple Apps.

In the case of iChat (and Messages showing Buddy List when open and Groups in Buddy lists then Lucida Grande is needed to title those Group bars in the Buddy Lists.

Ergo if the app opens even if it logs no account on any sort In, then these two Fonts are likely to be present.

If the App opens in another Mac User account and you can sign in and login the Apple ID for iMessages there  then the Font specifically needed from the iMessages Registration (Apple Gothic.ttf) would also appear to be working.

IT could be possible that the IDS: appleID-Auth Token is missing because you don't have Read and Write or possibly Ownership of the Login Keychain

In the Finder > Go Menu > GO to folder enter ~/Library/Keychains into the Dialogue box.

Highlight then do a Get Info on the Login Keychain.

In the Info panel you should Own it and have Read and Write permissions.

Fixed the missing keychain. and yet.... still same problem. i can login to messages, i then get the pop up on my iPhone that i logged in from my mac and when i try to contact someone they turn red.

As of this very moment, all i have are these snippets from console which I've taken a lot of time to narrow down. i think the may be the answer since they even occur on brand new OS X accounts. here they are (I am not sure weather the first snippet is connected but i am about the second):

    Hi,

    I am back.

The first reports that you list as a batch are one I have seen when there is a  Keychain issue.

The simplest of those seems to be that somehow the Mac User does not have Read  and Write Permissions to the Keychain or does not Have Ownership of it.

As the app is logging in and the iPhone is confirming that it would seem the issue is deeper.

    This one:-

2014-08-13 10:32:48.035 PM secd[209]:  SecErrorGetOSStatus unknown error domain: com.apple.security.sos.error for error: The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.security.sos.error error 2 - Public Key not available - failed to register before call)

Again looks like a Keychain issue but a item that I have nit seen linked to the Messages app before.  (Might be a File Vault issue - I have never used that so I am not sure)

The next error message seems related to that.

The last might possibly be about the Mac's own Firewall If ON.

In system Preferences > Security and Privacy is the Firewall On ?

If On Unlock th Padlock and use the Firewall Option Button.

Stealth should not be set as this stops other functions of Messages (Video and Audio Only chats and Screen Sharing with AIM and Jabber accounts).

The line "Automatically Allow signed Software... " should be ticked.

The Messages app and the support App IMAgent should be in the list.  (As FaceTime also uses IMAgent it should already be in the list)

if you have things turned On in the System Preferences > Sharing pane they will appear above a line in the list.

App you have allowed when asked (normally on First launch) and those added manually should be in the lower art of the list.

In addition the System may have added some that are needed because of the apps in use.

There comes a time when you need to know how to give up; although rare, I believe this to be one of those times. I'm just going to have to find the time to haul my iMac into an apple store . Unless the update to Yosemite in the fall fixes the problem. Here's the last of what I have to go on.

Block of errors any time I click inside the Keychain app window:

    Matt,

I am having the EXACT same problem as you, and it has also been months for me. iMessages will not work on my Macbook Pro or my iPad, but works fine on my iPhone. I too, have been on hold with the Apple store. In fact, I think they are actually trying to ignore me and not call me back because they don't know the answer. I just don't understand! I have tried literally EVERYTHING. Have you found a fix?
