Can't download photo files on AOL Pictures!

Hi, I have some trouble with downloading photo files on AOL Pictures to my computer. As you know, AOL Picture is a free web photo sharing service, and it says "YOU CAN UPLOAD FROM AND DOWNLOAD TO YOUR COMPUTER". However, everytime I click the button "download to my computer" on the web, photo files always appear with .exe. and cannot either open or read even with iPhoto 4! Does anyone know or have this kind of trouble, and tell me how to convert the photo files on the web to my computer??

Many thanks,

ibook G4 1.0 GHz, Mac OS X (10.3.9), AOL Pictures

Thank you for your reply, Peter.

You might be right. The files might be compressed. Still I'm not sure..., so could you please tell me how to check AOL settings, too? I currently use FireFox 1.5 to access "AOL Picture" every time.

I am not a member of AOL, so I don't know about AOL settings. I am just using one of free services on AOL Homepage through my AIM screen name, though.

Regarding the file with exe, I am downloading to my ibook. However, even I tried to download from AOL Picture to the Windows XP computer, still showed the same result...

Many thanks again,

The exe on the end of the file suggests to me it is a self extracting archive ( though not a Stuffit Mac .sea) of the Windows type. Meaning you double click on it and it opens your photo file, which you could them use in iPhoto.

My suggestions about AOL settings presumed you were a member.

I would look for a HELP link on that homepage or the download page.

Dear Peter,

Thank you so much! Thanks to a part of your message

"The exe on the end of the file suggests to me it is a self extracting archive ( though not a Stuffit Mac .sea) of the Windows type.",

I finally soloved this trouble with AOL Pictures!!!

It was like,

I tried to download the photos with Windows XP PC at my office today, and it worked quite well on Windows XP this time (I don't know why I failed to do last time, though). As you told me, the file with .exe self-opened and the JPEG file appeared on the desktop of PC. Then, I realized, "I'd need some sort of application for opening this kind of file with my ibook, MAC OS X because .exe file should self-open on Windows XP, not MAC OS X!"

I checked on AOL Free software for Mac, and AOL has Photo Management Application for AOL Pictures! Through this application, I could upload and download photos easily from everywhere, like from my friend's PC and anytime I could download those photos from my ibook!

The reason why I use AOL pictures is, I can share my photos with my friends who have Windows PC, and once I upload the photos, my friends could download only the photo they want at any time. I don't have to email and attach a bunch of photo I want to send to them, which would make it difficult for them to download b/c of huge file size. Moreover, I could store my photos on AOL Pictures as a back-up!

Again, I really appreciate your kind, heartful help, Peter!

Thanks for your reply, Brie Fly.

You are right. My question really involves AOL a lot. However, To share photos with either MAC users or Windows XP users, to store some photos on the web as back-up files, I think some of MAC users would like to use the web photo sharing service like I do, right? That's why I wondered if some MAC users have the same trouble. Plus, in discussion board here, there are lots of helpful MAC users who renpond fast like you and Peter! Anyways, I really appreciate your quick response for my question. That is why I love MAC and MAC users!

Just my curiosity popped up... Wonder what types of web based sharing photo service evry MAC users use. Do you use this kind of photo sharing service? Or most of MAC users use .MAC for sharing photos?

Just my curiosity...

Again, thanks to your message, I finally solved it! Now I can download photo files on AOL Pictures to my ibook, and put them into my album on iphoto!

Through my experience on this, I recommend AOL Pictures to MAC users to share, upload, download, or store your favorite photos! Once you download AOL Pictures for MAC which is available on AOL Home page, you can use it like .MAC!

Best regards,

Glad you got things working.

I am curious. When I download photos from AOL the come as .sea.bin compressed files - self extracting stuffit files in Mac Stuffit format.

Now I am doing this using AOL Mac OSX client software, so AOL knows it is dealing with a Mac. I don't use this feature much. Researching your question I did not find and AOL settings - user preferences - for this. So I guess it is automatic?

Thanks, Peter!

Oh, my god! you are right. I downloaded some again without AOL photo applications today on my ibook. It didn't open automatically, but when I dragged the .exe file into Stuffit, it opened as .jpeg file!!

Seems like I messed around on this discussion board with my stupid question... Sorry... I should have tried something more before I posted a question.

Now everything is all right!

Thanks again, Peter! I really learnt quite a lot through the question! Have a nice weekend!

It was a great question and we both learned something from it.
Trouble shooting team work.

If I have learned anything about trouble shooting it is to ask before doing anything destructive (reinstalling software etc.)
