Over the air using iCloud, Google or another cloud-based system.
You cannot sync contacts and calendars over USB if the computer is running Mavericks.

Apparently, I've now discovered, it's even been disabled with Mountain Lion. This ***** -- I have no interest in putting any personal information in the cloud.
I agree, they need to have an option to allow you to do ether. I do not own any sort of phone or tablet, so how is it possible for me to do such a thing. I have a 5G iPod Nano, that does not havy any WiFi capability.
