2009 Mac Pro PCI card problems

I have added an OWC Accelsior PCI SSD to my 2009 Mac Pro but it won't work ... I am trying to use it as a boot drive so I used the OS X Recovery System by holding down Command R at startup. I formatted the drive and then tried to download the OS (10.8.5) on to it. It stops after a few minutes with an error message that says, "OS X Mountain Lion failed to download ... Use the Purchases page to try again."

When I go back to Disk Utility, the drive no longer appears. I have tried putting it in two different PCI slots (2 & 3) to no avail. OWC assures me that this SSD is compatible with my computer.

I also tried to install an AT RadeonHD5870 video card in the PCI slot (1). Although the computer ran OK, the video performance seemed sluggish compared to my stock video card and then I started getting fluttering on the screen when I used the scroll wheel. OWC took the card back and sent me a new one and it is doing the same thing.

Either I am jinxed or something is wrong with my PCI bus .... Anybody?

I suggest you install the SSD in a regular slot or in the optical drive bay. Getting SSDs on those cards to Boot has been has been troublesome, although they work well for scratch drives.

There is no need to back yourself into Recovery mode to download and Install Mac OS X. It should show up on your "Purchases" page in the App Store, and you should be able to download it in the background with full Mac OS X running.

When it begins the Install, it will ask you to specify the drive and then Restart. If you want to make a Dual-Layer DVD or an 8GB Thumb drive copy of the Installer for your later use, that is the time you must do it -- the download self-destructs during the Install.

I will attempt the download from the App Store.

The SSD Accelsior is a PCI card and cannot be installed in the drive bays. I bought it because it embarrasses the next fastest SSD drive that would work in my drive bay and the speed would help me tremendously (work in Photoshop all day long).

Did you connect the two 6-pin Aux cables when you installed the 5870 card?

Yes, I connected the two 6-Pin Aux cables.

And, we would know that how?

Well, I mentioned in my original post, " OWC took the card back and sent me a new one and it is doing the same thing"

OWC says, "Well, there must be something wrong with your computer". They suggested that the power supply might be failing or, my favorite, the mother board.

Is the card properly seated?

I have taken both cards out several times, cleaned the contacts, cleaned the PCI ports (compressed air) and re-seated the cards.

My computer is running 10.8.5

Using SSD drives on those cards as Boot drives has been troublesome.

Define "troublesome".

I would have to purchase a different SSD drive for the drive bay, of course. I already have one OWC 3G in one of the bays which I bought as a scratch drive for Photoshop. The PCI SSD was to be my boot drive so I could enjoy it's incredible speed. The 3G drives don't have quite the dramatic speed increase.

What ports, adapters, and cables are you using to make the connection, and to what port on what display?

I am using the Mini Display port and the DVI port on the back of the Radeon card ... 2 Apple Studio monitors with the same cables I used with the old card.

I re-seated the Accelsior PCI SSD, formatted the drive with Disk Utility, and I downloaded OS X from the App Store and attempted to install it on the Accelsior. I got this error message (image shows earlier error message from the attempt to use OS XRecovery System):User uploaded file

So the Accelsior is going back to OWC today. I am disappointed ... My only goal was to optimize the potential of my early 2009 Mac Pro for running Photoshop. Processor upgrades are prohibitive, I've upgraded the Ram (32 GB), tried to add the Radeon 5870 video card, and tried to move the boot system to this SSD drive.

I guess that I will purchase another SSD for one of my drive bays and go with the 3G speed. I know it will be faster (if I can get it to work) but not as fast as that Accelsior would be (supposed to be compatible with my Mac).

Bummer about the Radeon card too. Apple sells this card in the Apple Store and says it works with my computer.

I do appreciate the help ... If anyone has a constructive idea for my PCI problem, I would sure love to hear it.

there tend to be problems with INSTALLING to an SSD on a PCIe card. Most vendors recommend installing first on a SATA2 bus SSD or hdd, and then clone to the PCIe card.

Take it up with OWC and also look at the threads, lot of them use to be on MacRumors section Mac Pro.

Card is excellent for data, and data adn scratch benefit MORE than the system boot drive, from 6G speeds. So Lightroom, Aperture, and PS scratch are all good candidates.
