Sync wont work

To sync you have to click the ITunes botton and then it shows sync, when i click it the button dissapears. Also when I try to sync from the sile sidebar it wont let me, the sync is shown as gray and unable to be used. HOW DO I SYNC? I have 7thgen ipod nano.
