itunes 11.1.4 - device not recognized

When we updated our iTunes, it began to no longer recognize any of our iOS devices. Any help resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Also, it's not the cord (the lightning cable) as when I licked it (don't ask), I was treated to a shocking sensation. This means that electricity is running from my computer to my iPod, while my iPod is not charging and not registering in iTunes. I've seen a few other questions like this, pertaining to iTunes 11.1.4 on Mac, and none of them have been answered.
