My iphone5 was stolen.

I had not enabled icloud on it yet since i am a newbie to apple products.

I know I can not locate my phone but is there any way to erase the data on my phone if it gets connected to the internet?

I have a screen lock, is it fool proof enough?

DO i need to report my device being stolen to anyone other than the local police? (apple support? maybe?)
