Q: How do I MOVE images WITHOUT COPYING, please?....

In Aperture 3.5.1 on Mac OS 10.9.1 and I have no accounts such as Flickr or Facebook listed in Aperture Account Preferences.

Project A has no Albums and Project B has various Albums containing images which were directly imported from camera...

I wish to MOVE only (not copy) some image/images from Project B's individual Albums to Project A.

If I drag-n-drop the image, Aperture only creates a copy in the new destination. I don't want so much duplication.

I have looked in the Help docs but cannot see an answer to my particular question, so I'm here.

Any help appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Robin

A move will only take place from a Project to another Project, by moving the Original.  Version "movement" between Albums only create copies.  You can drag to another Album and then Remove the version from the origin Album.

Thanks for the prompt reply and help, Ernie.

I selected an image (displayed as Stacked) in a Project B Album and drag-n-drop'd it in Project A. The stacked Original with all Versions was copied rather than moved to the Project A destination.

So, is it 'safe' to subsequently delete the Original + Versions from Project B's Album?

When I say "safe" I mean without deleting an original such that it's lost forever. Just so I understand it correctly, being a Copy, then I would hope that the Copy allows its Original remaining in Project B's Album to be destroyed and hence becomes a new Original in its new location.

I'm asking in such detail because I obviously don't want to risk destroying originals when experimenting with moving images.

This is one of the places where Apple has disingenuously presented Aperture.  It _is_ confusing.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, Albums (but not Smart Albums, which are different creatures in one important way) are always independent of Projects.

The position of an Album in the Library Inspector is, in terms of your data, meaningless.  You can move any Album anywhere in the Library structure shown in the Library Inspector, and, other than where it is shown to you in the Inspector, nothing is changed.  Album location has no bearing on Album content or on Project content.

(It may help to quickly review the parts of Aperture and how they inter-relate.)

As such, even though you may organize the containers in your Library in the Library Inspector so that Albums are shown as children of Projects, they have no relationship to any Project.  (Selecting a Project will not show you the contents of any Albums that are children of that Project.  Moving an Album that is a child of a Project to be a child of another Project in no way changes the contents of either of the Projects or of the Album.  And so on.)

I emphasize the above so that we can remove "Project" from your question, which becomes simple: how to move (not copy) an Image from one Album to another Album.

As Ernie has pointed out, this cannot be done in a single action.  (I don't know why.)  You must copy the Image into the second Album, and then remove it from the first Album.

I find it helpful to have two Browsers open when comparing containers and moving Images.  After selecting on of your Albums, hold down "{Option}" while selected the other one.  You can't drag images between the Browsers, but the container names are easy to find because they are highlighted in the Library Inspector, and you can drag images and drop them on the container name in the Inspector.

It would not be safe to delete anything you believe to be an Original!  This is because dragging any version into any Album is not moving anything.

Now if you want to change the Album a photo is in, then as both Kirby and I pointed out, you can drag to a new Album and then Remove the image from the first album.  The command to Remove from Album is not the same as Delete a Version, and the former does not impact any Original.

If you really want to move an image from one Project to another Project, then you must open the Project, and not the Album, and then drag from one Project into another Project (not Album).

Images are contained in a Project, but are merely referenced in an Album.

I can't see "Remove from Album" (Aperture 3.5.1).

Contextual Menu on any selected image offers me "Delete.." and "Export.." but not Remove..

I thought that Menu > File > Relocate Original... might do it but, as you know, it exports elsewhere than Aperture.

I thought that Menu > File > Relocate Original... might do it but, as you know, it exports elsewhere than Aperture.

Have you use "relocate"? Than fix this by using "Consolidate original" and move the original image files back into the aperture library. "Relocate original" does not export an image. It moves the original image files from the Aperture library. "Export" would create a copy.

I can't see "Remove from Album" (Aperture 3.5.1).

"Remove from Album ⌫" will only be available, when you are browsing a regular album, not when browsing a smart album. To remove something from a smart album, change the smart rules.

    Try Control Click.  Or Right-click.

Understood about Consolidating/Relocating Originals (being Referenced or Managed images) but I haven't relocated any originals.

Also understood about Control Click / Right-click to see Contextual Menu but I have no Smart Albums and I still do not see "Remove from Album".

Are you browsing an album and not a project?

Could you post a screenshot, of what you are seeing, when ctrl-clicking an image in an album?

There must be something buggy, if you are not seeing "Remove from album"

This screenshot is when I ctrl-click an image in an Album (not Smart Album and not Project):

I see the same if I ctrl-click an image in a Project.

Are you by any chance  selecting the image in a folder containing the album and not directly in the album?  That is the only way I can get the sam contextual menu as you.

No, leonie, I see the same list of options as I posted a screenshot of whether I select an image in an Album, an Album within a Project, or in a Project. I have not created or used any Folders in Aperture at all yet.

Your  screenshot does not show the library item you selected in the library inspector. So I had to ask.

If this is happening for all albums, I'd try if you are seeing the same, when you create a small test library.

    • If also cannot see "Remove from Album" in the contextual menu for the test library, I'd remove Aperture's  preferences file com.apple.Aperture.plist from your user library.
    • But if it works for a different library, repair your current aperture library.

The steps for deleting preferences or repairing the library are described in this document:

No problem you asking, leonie - I'm grateful for your help

When you say: "create a small test library" I assume you mean Library and not Project or Album or Folder.

    But I don't see 'Library' when I go Menu > File > New >...

Sorry to be so ignorant but how do I create a new Library to test, please?
