I have downloaded and used successfully the free trial version of Final Cut X on iMac v10.6.8, but am unable to purchase the download version without an upgrade of the OS. can anyone advise please?

You could try creating an external boot disc then install Mavericks there.

Then use the latest FCP X on that disc.

You keep all your old stuff intact.
