New problem updating to iTunes 11.1.4

Like hundreds of other users I am having serious problems updating iTunes. Having tried numerous suggested solutions, all to no avail, I system restored to a point before I tried to update. Following the restore I tried to open iTunes and now I'm faced with the message, "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes".Obviously reinstalling has once again proved a complete waste of time. Please help!

Thanks.

The second error is expected after the first and can be ignored. The first one is the problem. Wiping out the entire iTunes installation, including the listed folders, and then reinstalling really ought to fix it.

I've just searched my Apple/iTunes folders and don't see a copy of the file which would imply it is installed somewhere else. I've also searched the iTunes installation log to see if I can find exactly which version of the dll is installed and where, but no luck. It does seem that Vista might be implicated in the repair failure, but I'm not quite sure yet. It might be "self-healing" some of the changes that iTunes tries to make.

I'll hunt around for more information.

Doh! You made a typo with MSVCR90.dll and I didn't catch it when I copied the text to use as a search term, which explains my failure to find anything useful. The relevant part of the install log is this:

WriteRegistryValues: Key: \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\PatchedComponents, Name: {44272B9A-54E0-D091-B01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}, Value: C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_4 4262b86\\msvcr80.dll

Would you please select the text below and copy with CTRL+C

C:\WINDOWS\winsxs\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_x-ww_44 262b86

then press Windows Logo Key + R, then press CTRL+V to paste, and then click OK or press return.

You should either get a folder not found error, or the folder should open. If the folder opens you should see the following files.

User uploaded file

Either they are not there, or there is a permissions issue with them, or with the registry key that lets iTunes know where to find them.

Please let me know what happens.

Or another possibility is that the folder name isn't meant to be consistent across installs. 😟

I've just checked for the same folder on a 32-bit Windows 7 box and it is not found. I was looking from Windows XP earlier. I'll try and work out what the alternative addresses might be. I'm also assuming that you have 32-bit Vista, but would you please confirm? Thanks.

OK, I seem to have found the relevant folder on Windows 7, although the way the library is installed seems much more complicated, not that I understand the log anyway. I don't yet know if Vista should look more like XP or 7, but I suspect the latter.

The path I have is:

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_none_d0 9154e044272b9a

and here is what is in it:

I spent the afternoon with McAfee to get the download. I tried several times and got the missing dll file error. The guy told me that it is an issue that everyone is having. He had me uninstall ITunes, ITunes Update file, Mobile Device Support file, Bonjour and Apple App Support file. He said they had to be uninstalled in that order. Once they were all uninstalled, I went to the Apple website and downloaded the latest version on ITunes. Now, all is well.

Did you try the steps in the two boxes in the user tip Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates?

If not it would be worth trying again or we can try something more targeted.

If you'd like me to see if there is something more specific I can suggest please copy down the exact error messages that you get when you try to start iTunes.

In addition could you please go into Control Panel > Programs and Features and tell me which of these items are shown as installed:

Apple Application Support

Apple Mobile Device Support

Apple Software Update

Bonjour

iCloud

iTunes

HI,

I can't find either the QTMovieWin or QTMovieWin.dll files to delete them. I followed the directions you gave me, however, I could not find Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update or Bonjour. Some of them where there the first time I removed iTunes. The error I am currently getting is: "Apple Application Support was not found. Apple Application Support is required to run iTines. Please uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again. Error 2" Is there a way I could just download Apple Application Support? Would that even help?
