how can i get my music on my computer from the phone?

I have my iPhone plugged into my computer, but it iTunes told me it couldn't communicate with my phone because of something the phone told it. Now I have no idea wha tto do and I'm super frustrated at this point. I have been trying to find the answer for 20 mins.
