error message "application not found" when opening a file on the network

I keep getting an error message "application not found" when opening any file on the network. I have tried fixing the problem by starting up in single-user mode or verbose mode and reconfiguring the System Configuration, it's a temporary fix which lasts till I shut down. Im on an iMac using Mavericks. Any help will be greatly appreciated 😉

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

If anyone stumbles across this... I found the answer:

When you mount server with the Connect to Server command in the Finder's Go menu, use not smb, but cifs, as follows:

cifs://server_name_or_ip_address

Then everything gets back to normal.

Mavericks uses SMB2 by default and doesn't switch to SMB1 or AFP if server doesn't support SMB2
