When plugging in a monitor, can it add new spaces instead of redistributing them?

I use five spaces on my laptop, but when I plug in a cinema display it reduces to three plus three on the display (six in total). I would much rather it stay five spaces on the laptop and add new spaces on the display, and likewise get rid of those spaces (and revert to five) when I unplug and go portable. Is there a way to do this?

It's a bit of a burden to reorganize when windows/apps get redistributed like that, and when the structure of my workspace changes. Adding an additional display should be an augmentation of space.

Thanks!
