Pages 5.1 doesn't work

Since an auto update a couple of days ago to pages 5.1 (even with a fancy new icon), I cannot open the program nor any docs previously created. What kind of crap is this? I was completely happy with the previous version with its ugly icon.

The previous version did not have an ugly icon.

The new one has a bland, boring, non-informative and almost generic PC style icon.

Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

hi peter

i hope you can help me. i bought pages 5.1 and numbers 3.1 from the mac app store just now to upgrade from pages 08 and numbers 08. i still cannot open items created with the older software because the newer apps ask me to convert the items to pages and numbers 09? i do not have 09. why cannot the most current apple software be backwards compatible? this is ridiculous.

thanks

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.

Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.

Pages '08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.

Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them.

It can not open Pages '08 files at all. You need to export the Pages '08 files as Word .doc files and then open those with Pages 5.

Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.

All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.

Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.

Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

I would like to get rid of this Pages 5 and go back to utilizing Pages '09, which I can see in the Applications Folder. I'm having trouble with the grayed out files...could you give me a step by step way to trash the new '05 and bring everything back to the way it was. I see that Pages was updated to the new "5" version just 4 days ago(I think). As you probably can tell, when it comes to this stuff, I am technically challenged! I just like everything to work the way it's supposed to. I have '09 on the Mac, but I just want to lose the new version. I know it's a lot to ask, and i REALLY appreciate your help!

I don't consider myself a power user and I only started to discover all the issues with Pages 5.1 this week when I received some Word documents from a client and all the headers and pictures imbedded in the document were stripped out as "not supported." And then I had a letter to send to a client, used an older version and my company logo was missing as well as some other formatting. I also discovered that documents I had tried to collaborate on with a colleague using Word had my tracking changes and comments missing when I exported them to Word and back to him. This was never a problem with Pages 09. I figured out a few work arounds that are needlessly complex and of course unexplained....but the bottom line here is that this version is terrible and as Peter has suggested, I'm reverting to Pages 09 until someone at Apple decides to fix this!
