PCM or AAC 5.1 Surround over Apple TV HDMI?

I'm not sure if its possible for me to do what I'd like. In my work setup I actually do have audio coming out of my workstation as PCM over a MOTU HD Express HDMI connection to a Marantz receiver, and that works even at 96k 24-bit. So I was really hoping I could at least export 16-bit PCM (or even AAC for that matter) to Quicktime files to play in surround over my home receiver (different room than my work setup) over the Apple TV.

Apple TV 6.0.2

The Apple TV is connected to a Denon receiver over HDMI.

What does play back in surround:

Handbraked DVD's (using Apple TV3 preset) play in surround fine and show up as Dolby AC3. I know my movie files don't contain AC3, but am just illustrating that the receiver at least does receive surround in those instances.

What does not play back in surround:

Quicktime files that contain either PCM, or AAC 5.1 audio only. The receiver indicates the audio is stereo only.

Here is the info for one example movie file I'm trying to get to play in surround over this setup.

These video files are created/exported from AVID Pro Tools. It's easy enough to export the embedded audio in AAC 5.1, or PCM 5.1 to these files, but not an AC3 encoded file. I do surround sound work, and all I'm trying to do is export some surround files to check on my home theatre.

I'm currently checking to see if there is some receiver setting I'm missing, but since I haven't found anything yet, thought I'd ask if it's even possible to do what I'm trying using an Apple TV.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Dave.

Not so sure about PCM but I've had the Apple TV play AAC some time ago, so far as I'm aware if the Apple TV doesn't convert the audio for you it just gets passed through to the receiving device.

Most receivers can't decode AAC, are you sure that yours does. I'm not sure that most receivers can play PCM either, although unlike AAC where I suspect you will here either nothing or noise, with PCM it may just identify it as PCM multi-channel.

Thanks - yes the receiver definitely accepts PCM multi-channel. I figured that was the most likely to generate success, rather than AAC, but I've tried it both ways. FWIW it's a Denon AVR-1712.

There is extensive documentation in the manual that the receiver accepts PCM surround. I've checked several other input devices and sources, and it allows selecting the source based on the input its receiving. For example, the DVR is sending out Dolby Digital so that becomes a selectable choice under "Movie" mode (as well as other modes like music, etc.) In that menu there are other choices as well like Stereo, etc..

When choosing the Apple TV, for example if I choose a file that is Handbraked, I see Dolby Digital, Stereo, Pro Logic, etc., as choices. However when I choose my PCM multichannel files, the options become Stereo, Pro Logic, NEO DTS, etc.. I've tried them all and none of them play the channels correctly. I do hear undistorted audio (I made a video with discreet channels of pink noise, and switched around the channel orders just for grins), but no luck.

From what I can tell, the Apple TV is not passing the PCM audio thru to the receiver as multichannel. Its as if its folding it to stereo before passing it through.
