Don't get txt messages while listening to music

I get alerts about txts when my iPhone is in my pocket or next to me but whenever I'm listening to music, I don't hear it. Is it because it's on vibrate and I haven't turned it up enough? I've checked everything in the settings that I've read should I should have but still nothing
