Why was all my saved date deleted with the new MAC OX X download, and how do I get it back?!

Is there a way to get my saved documents back? Or my pictures? The software never warned it was going to delete everything I owned! Is there a way to back up your computer, if so, how? Please Help!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

you are supposed to back up BEFORE you upgrade.

If all your files are missing

You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.

If files are missing from one folder

Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.
