If you want to give the phone as a gift, then purchase the phone unlocked in the first place and then the person will not have a problem. Why can't you just buy an unlocked phone to start with and then they won't have a problem?

If you have not purchase the phone yet, then go to an Apple store and buy an unlocked phone in the first place and then you won't have any problem using it in India.

If the phone is carrier locked, then you'll need to contact the carrier/phone company and get them to unlock the phone and that is it. These are your only options.
