My iMac is a 2006 or 2007 Mac OS X version 10.4.11, and I want to delete everything and get it completely cleaned out. I backed up my pictures, I have all original Disks. How do I delete everything, and install my disks?

If everything is backed up just reformat the hard drive in Disk Utility and reinstall the operating system.

I would add:

  1. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to back up your whole hard disk
  2. Consider partitioning the disk into 2 volumes with a working OS on each - can be useful in emergencies and for repairs etc
  3. Don't import anything at the install stage - it may reintroduce problems
  4. After install keep using Software Update until it cannot find any more updates - may take a while
  5. Safest not to do this over wireless

At the beginning of 2006 Apple changed iMacs from G5 to Intel.

You can see the last G5 at:

and the first Intel at:

I don't understand why Apple say they don't support your Mac.

It is not normal to download anything to install from Apple OS CDs.

Put the CD in and try booting it by holding down the C key while it powers up.

It should not cost much to upgrade to OS X 10.6.

Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...

General requirements

* Mac computer with an Intel processor

* 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)

* 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)

* DVD drive for installation

* Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

* Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

The normal way to install an OS on this iMac is from a DVD.

Here are a few options if you don't have a compatible install DVD:

1 - Try repairing the existing OS with AppleJack

2 - Borrow an install DVD from a friend

3 - Transfer an OS from another Mac via FireWire

4 - Buy an OS X 10.6 DVD

5 - Reinstall from a backup if you have one

If you don't have a working DVD drive a few of your options are:

1 - Install from another volume or disk drive

2 - Install from another Mac via FireWire

3 - Try installing via Terminal from a mounted disk image or another volume with the following command:

sudo /Volumes/Leopard/System/Installation/CDIS/Mac\ OS\ X\ Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Mac\ OS\ X\ Installer /Volumes/Leopard/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg

Please note that the above command is for Leopard - it will need altering for Tiger or Snow Leopard.

There are probably several possibilities but it would be helpful to know:

1 - What is wrong with the existing OS and have you tried repairing it?

2 - What other Mac equipment do you have access to?

3 - Which OS install CDs and DVDs do you have access to?

4 - Which of these DVDs are model specific (often grey) and which are retail (sometimes black and/or with images)?
