Time Machine on External hardrive - have to wait when Save as

HI,

I am using external hardrive (normal 5600 hard drvie from laptop put in external caddy) as a Time Machine, whole disk. If it's not used to do a backup, it turns off automatically. When I want to save a file, for instance html file in Komodo Edit, I have to wait 20 seconds, so that this external drive will turn on again etc. I know that Maverick want to give me an oportunity to save file on that drive, but I use it only for Time machine backups. Is there a possibility tu exlude this drive from "Save as" like actions?
