You need to see if your system hardware is compatible with the other operating systems.

OS X Lion system requirements

To use Lion, make sure your computer has the following:

  • An Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
  • Mac OS X v10.6.6 or later to install via the Mac App Store (v10.6.8 recommended); you can install without Mac OS X v10.6 by using an OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, available on the Apple Online Store
  • 7 GB of available disk space
  • 2 GB of RAM

OS X Mountain Lion system requirements

To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac needs:

  • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory
  • 8 GB or more of available space

OS X Mavericks system requirements

To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
  • MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

Your Mac also needs:

  • OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
  • 2 GB or more of memory
  • 8 GB or more of available space

thank you so much for your detailed response. I'll need to figure out how to see what's on my computer but am sure I will be able to figure that out. My purpose is that I would like to connect my computer remotely to my tv for viewing via an airport express/ air parrot, apple remote? I'm not quite sure how that all works either but I do own an apple TV and assume I can connect them once I upgrade my 2010 computer. Thank you!

Hello mdegrazia1,

Upgrading your Mac/MacBook's Operating System should not cost any money, unless you are downgrading to a lower version of OSX. I honestly do not reccomend getting OSX Mavericks yet due to the numerous bugs with Apple's software. As said above, please refer to the version of OSX you are running, and the type of Mac you are using.

Incorrect, Lion and Mountain Lion cost money and Mavericks is free. I highly recommend Mavericks because it is working great on my system. Keep in mind you are in the emergency room for computers when browsing help forums, so the majority of ppl here will tell you there are problems, but in reality this is just a small amount of ppl that have upgraded to Mavericks.

How do I upgrade my MAC OSX 10.6 software and how much will it cost?
