Welcome to the Support Communities!
SSL stands for "Secure Sockets Layer." It is a protocol that your email service provider may use to provide communication security over the internet.
At the bottom of the article you referenced, there is a list of questions you should be able to ask your email service provider. Contact them to find out what your settings are for your account.

iOS: Adding a new email account can take time to verify, depending on the ISP's security settings

If you tap Yes to the question "Do you want to try setting up without using SSL" - it won't hurt anything. If your email provider does not use SSL, then this may help you finish the setup of your email account on your iOS device.
Cheers,
- Judy
